In this week’s edition of Four Downs, The Daily Mississippian football beat writer Matt Sigler, sports editor David Collier and managing editor Austin Miller answer four questions regarding the week’s matchup.

When Ole Miss and Pittsburgh clash in Saturday's BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., it could be one of the closest matchups of the bowl season.

Who has the advantage at each position? The Daily Mississippian sports editor David Collier takes a look.

When Ole Miss takes on Pittsburgh in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., Saturday, it may be one of the most interesting matchups of the bowl season.

Why?

On paper, the Rebels and the Panthers are very similar, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

The Daily Mississippian’s Bennett Hipp gives a recruiting update for the 2013 Ole Miss football recruiting class, which currently has 20 commits, according to Rivals.com, and 21 commits, according to Scout.com. Hipp also talks about the top prospects to watch during the recruiting season, which ends on national signing day (Feb. 6).

One of the three newest residence halls on The University of Mississippi campus will have a new name in the coming weeks after the state college board of trustees approved the university’s request.

University Trails resident and University of Mississippi student DJ Gregory has started a petition to promote more advanced security after several break-ins and a student being held at gunpoint a few weeks ago.

Marshall Henderson made quite a few stops before arriving in Oxford, but he is quickly making a name for himself as a Rebel.

With its 41-24 win against Mississippi State this past Saturday, Ole Miss finished the regular season with a 6-6 record and awaits its postseason fate. The Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. (Dec. 31, 11 a.m., ESPN) and the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. (Jan. 5, Noon, ESPN) have emerged as the two most likely destinations for the Rebels. Alabama (11-1), Georgia (11-1), Florida (11-1), LSU (10-2), Texas A&M (10-2) and South Carolina (10-2) are expected to accept bowl bids to the BCS National Championship Game, Allstate Sugar Bowl, Capital One Bowl, AT&T Cotton Bowl, Outback Bowl and Chick-fil-A Bowl, in some combination.

The Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday that Ole Miss was handed a $5,000 fine for violating the league’s policy on access to competition areas when Rebel fans ran on the field at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium following a 41-27 win over Mississippi State in this past Saturday’s Egg Bowl.

The Southeastern Conference is currently – or will soon be – reviewing fans going onto the field after Ole Miss’ 41-24 win against Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl, according to SEC associate director of media relations Chuck Dunlap. There is no timetable for when the league offices will make a decision.

When Hunter Hitt came home from school, he couldn’t help but cry as he told his mother what had happened to him. That day, 12-year-old Hunter had received a paddling at school for fighting with another student in his class. The fight was Hunter’s first disciplinary offense at Eupora High School, and James Courtney, a coach at the school, was the instructor who inflicted the punishment.

On Nov. 6, 2010, Ole Miss junior offensive lineman Derrick Wilson found out that his mother, Jelks Wilson, had been diagnosed with cancer.

I stepped on to the Ole Miss football beat for The Daily Mississippian at the beginning of the 2010 football season and immediately realized that the Ole Miss football program, which had won 18 games and back-to-back Cotton Bowls over the past two seasons, was headed in a drastically different direction.

Every night before bed 21- year old Jori LaVoy washes her face, brushes her teeth and then proceeds to do something that few other college students do- she takes first of 13 pills to control her ulcerative colitis.

For many students, college is an important first step in growing up, experiencing freedom and learning how to manage one’s time. For LaVoy, however, that transition was made much harder when she was diagnosed with a severe case of ulcerative colitis during the fall of her junior year.

The city of Oxford welcomes Tony La Russa as he will have a book signing tonight at 7 p.m. at Square Books.

In this week’s installment, The Daily Mississippian’s sports editor David Collier ranks the 14 Southeastern Conference teams. No. 2 Alabama will face No. 3 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game Saturday in Atlanta with the winner earning a spot in the BCS Championship Game.
