With its 41-24 win against Mississippi State this past Saturday, Ole Miss finished the regular season with a 6-6 record and awaits its postseason fate. The Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. (Dec. 31, 11 a.m., ESPN) and the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. (Jan. 5, Noon, ESPN) have emerged as the two most likely destinations for the Rebels. Alabama (11-1), Georgia (11-1), Florida (11-1), LSU (10-2), Texas A&M (10-2) and South Carolina (10-2) are expected to accept bowl bids to the BCS National Championship Game, Allstate Sugar Bowl, Capital One Bowl, AT&T Cotton Bowl, Outback Bowl and Chick-fil-A Bowl, in some combination.

Ole Miss’ Tyler Campbell has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2012 Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation’s top collegiate punter. The list of 25 candidates was announced Wednesday by the Augusta Sports Council.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss men’s tennis player Nik Scholtz has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, while Marcel Thiemann and Jonas Lutjen joined him on the All-SEC team as the league announced the 2012 postseason awards Thursday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss men’s tennis player William Kallberg has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday.  

 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss men’s tennis player William Kallberg has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday.  

The Stockholm, Sweden native went 3-0 in singles and doubles to help lead the Rebels to wins over Arkansas and LSU.  The wins kept the Rebels in the race for the SEC Western Division.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Ole Miss senior women’s tennis player Kristi Boxx punched her ticket to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships next month in New York with a win over Alabama’s Mary Anne Macfarlane in the final of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Monday.

Birmingham, Ala. — Senior defender Meredith Snow has been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, the SEC announced Monday morning.
Snow helped lead Ole Miss to wins over Vanderbilt (3-0) and Kentucky (2-1 OT) last week. She scored the third goal in a 3-0 win against Vanderbilt while anchoring a shutout against the Commodores.

Snow also helped the team to a 2-1 overtime win on the road at Kentucky. This season Snow is serving as a team captain and has recorded two goals while helping the Rebels to six shutouts on the year.

I know that I am not the only student who felt exhausted after the late-September-through-mid-October point in the semester that I have dubbed “Midterms Season.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss women’s tennis senior Kristi Boxx will play for the singles title at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships today after winning twice on Sunday.

In the quarterfinals, Boxx, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, came back to beat the No. 8 seed, Jenny Pfeifler of Auburn 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two late goals from Mandy McCalla and Rafaelle Souza weren’t enough as the Ole Miss soccer team fell at UAB 4-2 Saturday night.

With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 4-3-1 while UAB improved to 3-5. The game marked the final non-conference game for the Rebels.

Trailing 4-0, McCalla scored her second goal of the year for Ole Miss in the 68th minute off an assist from Souza while Souza scored her team-leading seventh goal of the year in the 81st minute off an assist from McCalla.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Four Ole Miss Rebels were recognized Thursday with their selection to the 2011 All-Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Preseason Football Team, including first-team honoree Bradley Sowell.

A senior from Hernando, Miss., Sowell was chosen as an offensive lineman on the preseason first team, while fellow tackle Bobby Massie, of Lynchburg, Va., was named to the third team. Senior defensive end Kentrell Lockett, of Hahnville, La., was selected to the coaches’ second unit along with junior punter Tyler Campbell of Little Rock, Ark.

The Ole Miss basketball team finished the 2011-12 season with a 20-14 record and a first-round exit from the National Invitation Tournament. Michael White left for a head coaching position at Louisiana Tech, Owen Miller to become the head coach at Gulfport High School and Torrey Ward to pursue other coaching opportunities. The Daily Mississippian reporter Camal Petro introduces the three new assistant coaches, their experiences and the challenges they face.

 

Bill Armstrong was elevated in April from coordinator of basketball operations to assistant coach under Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy.

“I’m excited about the opportunity and very excited about the upcoming season,” Armstrong said. “I’m counting down the days.”

With storms stretching across six states and a death toll of at least 249, the South has experienced the deadliest tornado outbreak in almost four decades.

In Mississippi, there were an estimated 33 deaths, 14 of which were confirmed in Smithville.   

The small town, only an hour and a half from Oxford, experienced an EF-4 tornado yesterday, with estimated 190 mph winds. According to the Weather Channel, dozens of brick homes are leveled, and trees were debarked.

Law Dean Richard Gershon said that this would be a special day for the University and is expected to attract over 500 people.

“It is a great tribute to the chancellor emeritus, who transformed this University,” Gershon said.
“He did a great job not only with buildings, but also transforming the reputation of the University. I’m honored to be in a building named for him.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Ole Miss track and field athlete Barnabas Kirui and University of Georgia track and field athlete has been named the 2010-11 Brad Davis Southeastern Conference Community Service Leader of the Year, alongside Bridget Lyons of the University of Georgia, commissioner Mike Slive announced Tuesday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Ole Miss track and field athlete Barnabas Kirui and University of Georgia track and field athlete has been named the 2010-11 Brad Davis Southeastern Conference Community Service Leader of the Year, alongside Bridget Lyons of the University of Georgia, commissioner Mike Slive announced Tuesday.

The two were chosen by a committee of faculty athletics representatives from SEC universities. Each will receive a $6,000 post-graduate scholarship, provided by the SEC.

The Farmers’ Market, a greengrocer located on North Lamar, is a one-stop shop for local produce, obscure spices, international fare and artisan meats and cheeses.

The Farmers’ Market has bushel-loads of character, from the handwoven shopping baskets to the handwritten labels describing which town, state or country the produce is from.

Hard work and dedication are paying off for the University of Mississippi women’s Ultimate Frisbee team. 

Hard work and dedication are paying off for the University of Mississippi women’s Ultimate Frisbee team.  

The Ole Miss women’s Ultimate Frisbee team traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala., in January to compete in the T-Town Throwdown tournament held by the University of Alabama. After six games of play throughout the tournament, the Ole Miss ladies found themselves with their first ever championship win.
