In this week’s edition of Four Downs, The Daily Mississippian football beat writer Matt Sigler, sports editor David Collier and managing editor Austin Miller answer four questions regarding the week’s matchup.

1. How much will the long layoff effect Ole Miss?

Matt Sigler (@SigNewton_2): I think the long layoff will show early in the game, but eventually, I believe Ole Miss will settle in and not have any problems getting things back on track.

For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl.

It’s that time of the year where few players are completely, 100 percent healthy.

That is the case for Ole Miss and was the reason sophomore quarterback Bo Wallace sat out the majority of Tuesday’s practice. Wallace has dealt with a shoulder bruise and soreness for most of the season.

Up 26-20 and in position to clinch bowl eligibility for the first time since 2009 after another field goal from Bryson Rose, Ole Miss’ defense couldn’t stop Vanderbilt from driving nine plays for 72 yards in 1:51. The Commodores topped it off with a Jordan Rodgers 26-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Chris Boyd to tie the game at 26-26.

ATHENS, Ga. — With Ole Miss up 10-7 in the second quarter, Georgia had the ball and the momentum after a 66-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Aaron Murray to senior wide receiver Marlon Brown. Then, Ole Miss and Georgia combined for four turnovers in the span of five plays, and while no points were scored off the turnovers, the Rebels missed out on a prime scoring opportunity after the first of the four turnovers.

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze readily admits that it’s “very tempting” to shift his offense into overdrive and run a higher percentage of up-tempo plays. However, a lack of depth on both sides of the football makes that tough to do, as the Rebels are down to 64 healthy scholarship players.

“That’s my nature, it is what I would like to do,” Freeze said. “If we were a little deeper in the secondary and at defensive end, it would be even more tempting. It’s still tempting.”

The Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 30-27 on Saturday on the foot of senior Bryson Rose’s 31-yard field goal as time expired. While Rose was carried off the field in triumph, the Rebels’ second-straight Southeastern Conference victory was much more than a one-man job.

Tasked with preparing for Auburn and recovering from a devastating loss to Texas A&M, Wallace was also worrying about his sister Baylee, who suffered a fractured neck in an automobile accident last Monday.

After facing an effective scrambling quarterback last weekend in freshman Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M, the Ole Miss defense will once again have to prepare for the unexpected when the Rebels (3-3, 0-2 SEC) take on Auburn (1-4, 0-3 SEC) this Saturday.

Auburn has had its share of struggles on the offensive side of the ball this season, but Ole Miss defensive coordinator Dave Wommack said that at some points it is like the Tigers are running five or six different offenses.

Ole Miss isn’t sure what to expect from Auburn offensively on Saturday, but co-offensive coordinator Dan Werner knows exactly to expect when the Rebels’ offense takes the field Saturday against Auburn’s defense.

“They’re really good on defense," Werner. "You look at some of their scores; they’ve only given up a couple touchdowns all year long, so they’re really fast and really physical. It’s going to be a real good test for us.”

That step, he said, was “to get into the fourth quarter with some of these conference opponents that are really good teams and us learn from that regardless of the outcome.”

There are points in every game where a play breaks down and the quarterback has to rely on his instincts and intangibles to attempt to make a play.

The same applies for Ole Miss sophomore quarterback Bo Wallace, who is now faced with the challenge of adjusting those instincts as he learns what works in Southeastern Conference play and what doesn’t.

Turnovers are something that Wallace knows Ole Miss cannot afford, as the Rebels’ margin of error in games they want to win is incredibly slim.
