The scent of comfort food fills the front of the bakery as you enter off the Oxford Square, home to a few mixers, some cake racks and a ton of buttercream icing.
Oxford’s very own Emiliegh’s Bakery has been around for about 10 years. Its catering business started one Christmas when owner Linda Fleming and a friend decided to make gift baskets.

It’s time to say happy 20th birthday to someone special to all of us: text messaging. This year text messaging will celebrate its 20th birthday, and everyone is invited.
The first text message was sent at a Vodaphone Christmas party in 1992 from a computer to an Orbitel 901 handset, and it said “Merry Christmas,” according to urban legend.
But with age comes responsibility.

Lafayette County and the city of Oxford are searching for buyers for 42 bars of silver.

The bars, which weigh in at 100 ounces each according to an Associated Press report, were found in a safety deposit box during the closing of Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Before Christmas, the city released a request for proposal. Five or six bids were placed, but none were high enough, according to Mayor George “Pat” Patterson.

Well, it’s a new year and a new semester, and for me, apparently, a new addiction, and I’m not sure that I’m all that happy about it.

Christmas lights, red and green ribbon, apple cider, pine needles and laughter filled the rooms of “Lucille’s Place” Tuesday night.
The historic home, along with its two sister homes, Bess and Lilly, were open for touring to raise money for the Leisure Lifestyles of Oxford.
Leisure Lifestyles of Oxford is a non-profit organization geared towards senior citizens in the community. The organization offers free dance classes, art classes and yoga classes, along with many other opportunities for senior citizens.

The Student Programming Board will show that they take “the most wonderful time of the year” seriously.
A new event called Grand Ole Christmas, a night of Christmas fun, will be from 7-11 p.m. in the Student Union.
“We are excited to host our annual Christmas event again this year,” said Bradley Baker, coordinator of campus programming. “We hope that this event is entertaining for not only Ole Miss students but families in the community as well.”

Imagine your typical Thanksgiving. There is a perfectly cooked turkey, friends and family all around, succulent honey ham, mouth-watering stuffing and the best pecan pie you’ve ever tasted. Shouldn’t everybody have an opportunity to enjoy that? Unfortunately, not everyone gets the chance to enjoy what most of us enjoy yearly.
The Lambda Sigma chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority saw fit to spend its break in Oxford to help those who would have gone without the Thanksgiving experience this year.

What are you buying this holiday season?

Christmas only comes once a year, so it’s pretty important to make the most of it. When it comes to gifts, some of us will get more than others but it’s important to be grateful no matter what.

Black Friday sales increased 7 percent this year compared to 2010, according to ShopperTrak research.
This is a good sign for retailers heading into the holiday buying season. The question is whether this increase will translate into higher profits for Oxford’s businesses.
University of Mississippi student Amanda Knight, an Oxford local, said she usually does her shopping in Oxford.

The Oxford-Lafayette community will participate in Operation Christmas Child, a global Christmas project, for its 11th year, to collect 4,000 shoeboxes.

Every November, millions of shoeboxes, filled with toys, hygiene items and school supplies, are collected to send to less-fortunate children all over the world.

For Oxford Relay Coordinator Mae Stone, this is more than a seasonal project. Stone collects items year-round in order to fill hundreds of boxes.

It’s been three years since we last heard from Harold and Kumar, and I don’t think there’s been any major outcry for another sequel, but here they are with “A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas,” anyway.

It’s been three years since we last heard from Harold and Kumar, and I don’t think there’s been any major outcry for another sequel, but here they are with “A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas,” anyway.

Set six years after their last adventure, “HK3” picks up with our affable stoner heroes, Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn), who are leading separate lives and haven’t spoken to each other in a few years.

Growing up, Halloween was probably my favorite holiday of the year, second only to Christmas.

I was a really imaginative kid, so the idea of getting to dress up and parade around all day as something else — and get rewarded for it in candy — easily earned Oct. 31 a spot on my “favorite days of the year” list.

Sororities and fraternities give back to the Oxford community in a non-traditional way.

Sororities and fraternities give back to the Oxford community in a non-traditional way.

Along with game days and fall boots, sorority and fraternity swap season has begun.  For all the non-Greeks out there, swaps, also known as mixers or date parties, consist of a fraternity and a sorority coming together for a themed party at a local Oxford venue, usually a bar on the Square.

There are over 30 sororities and fraternities on the University of Mississippi campus, and most plan swaps at least a few times a semester.

For the first time in our nation’s history, the American Dream is in jeopardy. That dream is founded on a creed enshrined in the Constitution to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity.” It wasn’t meant to describe who we wanted to be, or ought to be, but who we are.

I’m 21-years-old and a senior at Ole Miss.

I’ll graduate next Christmas with two bachelor’s degrees. Despite my preparation, I’m worried for my future.

I want a career I’m passionate about, I want to marry a woman I love, and I hope to retire on the merits of my own labor in a nice home where I can mow my lawn and chat with my neighbors over the hedge. But with each passing day, this dream seems less available to me and my peers.
