For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl.

It was a crazy scene inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Saturday night as Ole Miss fans celebrated the Rebels’ 41-24 win in the Egg Bowl over Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), which snapped the Bulldogs’ three-game winning streak in the series. Students rushed the field after the win and surrounded players, coaches and the Golden Egg trophy.

There was a time this season in which teams looked forward to having their defenses go up against LSU junior quarterback Zach Mettenberger. That time, it’s safe to say, has come and gone.

There was a time this season in which teams looked forward to having their defenses go up against LSU junior quarterback Zach Mettenberger. That time, it’s safe to say, has come and gone.

Mettenberger threw for 298 yards and a touchdown in a heartbreaking loss to Alabama two weeks ago and followed that up by tossing two touchdowns and 273 passing yards in a win against Mississippi State this past weekend.

ATHENS, Ga. — With Ole Miss up 10-7 in the second quarter, Georgia had the ball and the momentum after a 66-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Aaron Murray to senior wide receiver Marlon Brown. Then, Ole Miss and Georgia combined for four turnovers in the span of five plays, and while no points were scored off the turnovers, the Rebels missed out on a prime scoring opportunity after the first of the four turnovers.

The Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 30-27 on Saturday on the foot of senior Bryson Rose’s 31-yard field goal as time expired. While Rose was carried off the field in triumph, the Rebels’ second-straight Southeastern Conference victory was much more than a one-man job.

To be a freshman and be a leader, particularly in the Southeastern Conference, is rare, in the words of head coach Hugh Freeze. However, Ole Miss redshirt freshman linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche has done just that.

“There’s no age, there’s no perfect rubric for being a leader,” Nkemdiche said. “If you want to be courageous and step up and lead by example, lead vocally, why not? If my teammates take that into their perspective and respect that, why not keep doing it and show up every weekend?”

Two years removed from playing high school football at Sylva-Bay Academy, and one year removed from being thrown into the Southeastern Conference mix as a true freshman, sophomore safety Cody Prewitt has emerged as a leader and playmaker for a young but improving Ole Miss defense.

A new defensive scheme under defensive coordinator Dave Wommack has allowed Prewitt to be more confident in his actions on the field.

The Rebels are coming off a hard-fought loss to No. 1 Alabama this past weekend, while the Aggies defeated Arkansas last weekend 58-10 and appear to be settling into the SEC well so far. Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze knows he and his team will have a tough challenge this weekend.

Nineteen Rebels made their first appearances in an Ole Miss uniform Saturday. No debut may have been bigger on the defensive side of the ball than that of redshirt freshman Denzel Nkemdiche, who recorded a team-high eight tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack in Ole Miss’ 49-27 win and played with what Freeze called “reckless abandon.” His numbers could have been even better if not for having to receive an I.V. during the game due to dehydration.

After good, solid practices over the weekend, head coach Hugh Freeze wasn’t happy with the way his team performed on Tuesday.

“Disappointed, really disappointed,” Freeze said. “I didn’t think the attitude was bad. I just thought the effort was half-hearted. I thought we coasted through a lot of practice.”

Freeze went on to say that there is no excuse for the effort not being there each and every day.

Wednesday’s practice belonged to the defense.

Thursday could not have been any different, with the offense showing out. Ole Miss Coach Houston Nutt was pleased with the offensive performance after practice.

“I thought we competed really hard today,” Nutt said. “We got into some tight red zone today and guys rolled off the ball.”

Ole Miss had its fourth practice of camp on Tuesday, and head coach Houston Nutt came away pleased with how his quarterbacks played.

“I thought the quarterbacks threw the ball really well today” Nutt said. “Zack Stoudt threw the ball really well today, I think at one time he was about nine of ten (on throws). (Randall) Mackey threw the ball well today, hit a couple of touchdowns. Barry (Brunetti) hit a couple touchdowns, so they are getting better, and we just have to keep going.”

Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt met with members of the media Thursday afternoon after freshmen and transfers arrived.

Nutt told those gathered that everyone except defensive back Denzel Nkemdiche and defensive end Kameron Wood reported to camp.

Nutt said he expects Nkemdiche to report soon.

“It’s just some little school stuff," Nutt said. "We thought he was cleared. He went to summer school all summer (at Ole Miss), so I feel real good about it.”
