For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl.

The situation Saturday night was all too familiar for Ole Miss. Having the lead with just over two minutes left in the game, a defensive stop would have propelled the Rebels to six wins and bowl eligibility. Instead, they were handed another heartbreaking. This time by the Vanderbilt Commodores, who became bowl eligible themselves with the win.

“There’s no age, there’s no perfect rubric for being a leader,” Nkemdiche said. “If you want to be courageous and step up and lead by example, lead vocally, why not? If my teammates take that into their perspective and respect that, why not keep doing it and show up every weekend?”

Saturday’s win over UTEP was a big milestone for a program trying to get out of the bottom of the Southeastern Conference.

The Rebels’ 28-10 win over the visiting Miners of Conference-USA not only gave Ole Miss their same win total from 2011’s disappointing 2-10 season, but it was the first time Ole Miss opened the season 2-0 since defeating Memphis and Southeastern Louisiana in 2009. It was also the first time the Rebels won back-to-back games since wins over Fresno State and Kentucky in 2010.

It was a feeling that had not been felt in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in nearly a year.

The Ole Miss football team rebounded from a lackluster second quarter and scored 35 unanswered points in the second half for a 49-27 win against Central Arkansas to begin the season 1-0 for the first time since 2009. The Rebels rushed to the student section to share in the moment, the program’s first home win since last season’s 42-24 win against Southern Illinois in the second week of the season.

American Idol’s newest judge, Mariah Carey, was supposedly picked for her “star power.” She is a Grammy-winning entertainer and has been touted as having had more number one hits in the U.S. than any other solo artist. That’s pretty impressive. Yet, for the life of me, I seem to recall all that happening in the 1990s.
