Through the efforts of University of Mississippi Panhellenic officers, Greek life will soon welcome a new chapter on campus.

“As of Wednesday, March 28, 2012, we are open for expansion and everything has been approved,” said Panhellenic President Katie Kellum.

The process started after Bid Day 2011.

At this point, the quotas for pledge class sizes have grown too large for each of the nine sororities on campus.

The empty sensation of freshman year was a surreal feeling for computer science major, Lakeshia Brock.

Brock had only been on campus three weeks when she started wandering through the maze of social activities to find her place on campus. After finding no outlet to exemplify both of her heritages, Puerto Rican and African American, she created Goddess, a social group that strives to become the first multicultural sorority on campus.

For some students at the University of Mississippi, Union Unplugged is the face of National Pan-Hellenic Council Greeks.

The event, which usually happens every Tuesday, has become a showcase for traditionally black sororities and fraternities. The energetic step routines always attract a crowd of students to the front of the Student Union every week.

In 1985 Beta Upsilon Chi (BYX, pronounced ‘buxs’) was founded at the University of Texas at Austin as a Christian fraternity. Three years after, Sigma Phi Lambda (Phi Lamb) was founded as a Christian sorority.

It has been exactly one month since the judicial council at the University of Mississippi first met regarding an incident involving the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After a month-long break and a week to review the fraternity’s appeal, the final ruling has been made.

The fraternity was found in violation of hazing, registration of activities and alcohol-related charges.

The charges came from a police report involving the abuse of alcohol, according to Judicial Council Chairman Courtney Pearson.

Over a thousand women representing eight different sorority pledge classes danced Tuesday night in the thirteenth annual Theta Encore.
This year, Pi Beta Phi stole the show.
Theta Encore, a dance competition between Panhellenic’s fall pledge classes, is hosted each year by the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Known as one of the largest philanthropy events on the Ole Miss campus, Theta Encore benefits Theta’s national philanthropy Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Scarlet Lawrence Akins Foundation.

Several weeks after the announcement that the Kappa Sig fraternity had been indefinitely suspended pending an investigation, the University of Mississippi judicial council has made a decision on their fate.

The decision will be made public tomorrow, because the council must first meet in the Dean of Students office to confirm their decision, then inform the fraternity before going public.

When the average person thinks of the University of Mississippi, several things come to mind including its rich tradition in arts and literature, beautiful people, campus and, of course, the Greek scene.
Ranked as one of the top five greek schools in the nation, but there is more than just the infamous partying brought forth by popular culture when it comes to the Greek system, as it has raised over $500,000 for philanthropies over the past two years.

The Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter at the University of Mississippi is serving an interim suspension while they are under investigation, the reason for which is unknown.
The fraternity is not allowed to hold any parties at their house or hold any event while the investigation is ongoing. Associate Dean of Students Scott Wallace explained an interim suspension is fairly routine for any Greek fraternity or sorority if they are in the process of being investigated.

Sororities and fraternities give back to the Oxford community in a non-traditional way.

Sororities and fraternities give back to the Oxford community in a non-traditional way.

Along with game days and fall boots, sorority and fraternity swap season has begun.  For all the non-Greeks out there, swaps, also known as mixers or date parties, consist of a fraternity and a sorority coming together for a themed party at a local Oxford venue, usually a bar on the Square.

There are over 30 sororities and fraternities on the University of Mississippi campus, and most plan swaps at least a few times a semester.

Jane Smith waited anxiously to hear the good news. She knew that she would get into the sorority of her dreams. She had to. Her mom, her aunt and even her grandmother had all been Delta Gamma sorority members when they were students at the University of Mississippi. Jane knew she must continue the legacy.

NewsWatch takes a look at recruitment from several angles.

I am lucky because I am one of the few women on this campus who have had the opportunity to experience every side of the Pan-Hellenic recruitment process as an undergraduate.
As a freshman, I was the naïve Potential New Member (PNM) who was afraid of being released. I was the sophomore in-house active creeping on the top of the door stack, screaming at the top of my lungs.

As we close in on the midway point of another semester there a quite a few hot topics that students are talking about around the campus. Parking, our football team, free scantrons, Amendment 26 and when the exact date that it will become fashionable again to wear leggings, XXXXL sweatshirts and rain boots. I'm thinking mid-October.

That said, I am going to take a different route, and talk about an issue that has been untouched as of yet by the campus water-cooler. Intramurals. I'm sticking to the important issues see?

I joined the Greek system here with a certain sense of reluctance, unsure of what my commitment to a fraternity would mean.

However, in the two years I was in a fraternity, I met many of my closest friends and grew as a person through countless positive experiences. This is why I was so frustrated by what I saw and heard in my first recruitment process as a member this past fall. It might be because I am so naive that I never considered why fraternities and sororities are so disproportionately white.

A dream long realized will have come true in the not very distant future when seven fraternities begin occupying their new homes. Two houses, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Phi Delta Theta, were ready at the start of the current year.

African-American Greek organizations have come a long way in the past several years but on some college campuses their community service and philanthropy go unnoticed. At the University of Mississippi, many of the African-American sororities and fraternities seem to mostly fly under the radar, no matter how many good deeds they do.

The fraternity has laid roots at the University of Mississippi multiple times throughout the years, and in the fall of 2009, the group returned to campus to start anew.

This year, the number of members has nearly doubled and they are beginning to receive the recognition that they have worked for since day one.

Their numbers have nearly doubled, and they are beginning to receive the recognition they have been striving for since day one.

But the question arises why the members of Sigma Pi chose to be a part of this fraternity starting from the ground up, opposed to the dozen other fraternities on campus.

With the student body at historically large proportions, on-campus housing has become increasingly difficult to find.

For the 2011-2012 academic year, the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life has informed the Ole Miss sororities that there will no longer be guaranteed housing in Crosby Hall due to an incoming freshman class expected to be larger than the current class.

Traditionally, Crosby Hall houses sophomore sorority members.
