Some perspective is required when thinking about where the 2012 Ole Miss team realistically is in the aftermath of Saturday’s 27-26 loss to Vanderbilt that clinched bowl eligibility for the Commodores and put the Rebels’ bowl hopes on hold for at least another week.

Ole Miss has made significant progress under head coach Hugh Freeze, but there are some things that are beyond a coach’s control.

Depth, for example, is one of them.

Over the last two games against Arkansas and Georgia, Ole Miss has found itself unable to move the football on the ground.

The rushing attack was a key factor in the Rebels’ early season offensive success, as the team topped 150 yards rushing in six of their first seven games. However, over the last two weeks, the Rebels have combined for just 123 yards on 66 carries, averaging out to just 1.86 yards per carry.

Football is something synonymous with Mississippi; really, with the South in general. Families are born and bred by it, friendships are formed by it, and sometimes even broken up by it.

Football is something synonymous with Mississippi; really, with the South in general. Families are born and bred by it, friendships are formed by it, and sometimes even broken up by it.

Football, in its essence, is something far more than a game. To explain the use of this term: It is a violent game filled with great risks. Players are injured every day, yet the public still comes back each season, buying their tickets, and preparing themselves for another season of wins or losses: All in the name of the game.

ATHENS, Ga. — With Ole Miss up 10-7 in the second quarter, Georgia had the ball and the momentum after a 66-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Aaron Murray to senior wide receiver Marlon Brown. Then, Ole Miss and Georgia combined for four turnovers in the span of five plays, and while no points were scored off the turnovers, the Rebels missed out on a prime scoring opportunity after the first of the four turnovers.

Keep an eye on 29

Ole Miss is going to have its hands full Saturday afternoon defending No. 29 Jarvis Jones, a junior linebacker. Jones, one of the top linebackers in the country, has been wreaking havoc on opposing offenses all season long. The Bulldogs move Jones around quite a bit and have enough playmakers around him to make teams pay for overcompensating against Jones.

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze readily admits that it’s “very tempting” to shift his offense into overdrive and run a higher percentage of up-tempo plays. However, a lack of depth on both sides of the football makes that tough to do, as the Rebels are down to 64 healthy scholarship players.

“That’s my nature, it is what I would like to do,” Freeze said. “If we were a little deeper in the secondary and at defensive end, it would be even more tempting. It’s still tempting.”

One of many bright spots this season for the Ole Miss football team is the emergence of freshman huskie Mike Hilton. The Fayetteville, Ga., native came out of Sandy Creek High School as a highly-touted offensive player, but found himself on the other side of the ball at the college level.
