Content about Memphis

November 30, 2012

I have been in the U.S. since August 2011. Since then, I have been to two football games at Ole Miss and three NBA basketball games in Memphis.
I still remember the first football game I went to last September against BYU. American sports enthusiasm was beyond my imagination.

I’ve had a curious relationship with Ole Miss since I began seeing her in adolescence. One of the earliest memories I have of her is how she looked when Florida came to Oxford in 2002. I remember all of her admirers being elated to call themselves her Rebels that day – and I began to admire her as well.

It’s hard enough to make an impact as a true freshman, but it’s that much harder in the Southeastern Conference.

It’s hard enough to make an impact as a true freshman, but it’s that much harder in the Southeastern Conference.

However, Ole Miss’ Jaylen Walton has done just that. The Memphis native has three touchdowns on the season, all in different ways — a 10-yard touchdown run against Central Arkansas in the season opener, a 51-yard touchdown catch against UTEP and most recently, an electric 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Texas.

The Rebels’ 28-10 win over the visiting Miners of Conference-USA not only gave Ole Miss their same win total from 2011’s disappointing 2-10 season, but it was the first time Ole Miss opened the season 2-0 since defeating Memphis and Southeastern Louisiana in 2009. It was also the first time the Rebels won back-to-back games since wins over Fresno State and Kentucky in 2010.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am thoroughly enjoying my summer break. While currently in Texas visiting family, it is so nice to basically have free time - all the time. I’ve come to realize that the reason summer is so magnificent is because we’re able to do the activities we couldn’t otherwise do during the semester.

The past couple of seasons it seems Mississippi State has had Ole Miss’ number in just about every sport. Rooster Blues is a self-described, Hattiesburg-based brother-duo that hails from the birthplace of rock ’n roll. These Jimi Hendrix acolytes have been laying down their blend of blues, funk, jazz and good old-fashioned rock ‘n roll into an electrifying live show since 2003. Since then, they’ve recorded three albums and picked up a bluegrass flavor to their style.

The team, coached by JoAnn Edwards and Debra Yancy, has traveled to debate tournaments from as far west as Portland, Ore., to as far east as Boston, Mass. Despite sometimes having to drive 13 or more hours and running off of nothing more than coffee, crackers and a prayer, the team seems to have great, unique experiences everywhere they go.

He also did not realize that documenting his last season at Manassas would bring home an Oscar for best documentary.
It all started in 2004 after his friend Jim Tipton told the school he knew a guy who could help out. Courtney agreed, with no intention of staying there long — much less for six years.
