Grayson (Ga.) senior defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, the nation's No. 1 football recruit and the brother of Ole Miss redshirt freshman linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche, has decomitted from Clemson. 

 

Neal McCready of RebelGrove/Rivals.com first reported the news Wednesday night and it was confirmed by Will Hammock of the Gwinnett Daily Post Thursday morning.

Up 26-20 and in position to clinch bowl eligibility for the first time since 2009 after another field goal from Bryson Rose, Ole Miss’ defense couldn’t stop Vanderbilt from driving nine plays for 72 yards in 1:51. The Commodores topped it off with a Jordan Rodgers 26-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Chris Boyd to tie the game at 26-26.

On Oct. 1, 1962, James Meredith became the first black man to attend Ole Miss, making history and changing the future of The University of Mississippi forever.

To commemorate the occasion, the university is hosting a number of events centering on Meredith to celebrate the anniversary, labeling it “50 Years of Integration: Opening the Closed Society.”

Third-down defense
 
The Rebels’ defense has consistently improved throughout the season, but one part of the game where they still struggle is third-down defense. On the year, Ole Miss ranks 91st in the country in opponent third-down conversion percentage, allowing opponents to convert almost 44 percent of third downs.

The Ole Miss volleyball team (10-10, 4-7 Southeastern Conference) snapped a four-game losing streak with a home weekend sweep against Missouri and South Carolina.

The Ole Miss Lady Rebels (9-10, 3-7 SEC) carried a four-game losing streak into their match with Missouri (14-6, 6-4) on Friday night and snapped that streak with a 3-1 upset win against the Tigers (25-17, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21).

Head basketball coach Andy Kennedy held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to discuss the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season. There are a lot of expectations surrounding the program, and this year's team is arguably the most experienced team Kennedy has had.

“There’s no age, there’s no perfect rubric for being a leader,” Nkemdiche said. “If you want to be courageous and step up and lead by example, lead vocally, why not? If my teammates take that into their perspective and respect that, why not keep doing it and show up every weekend?”

Defensive back Mike Hilton made the first start of his young career at the huskie position and received his first extensive playing time as well.

The Ole Miss basketball teams will begin their seasons in a unique fashion. The men’s and women’s teams will hold a practice on the Square Friday night in the first ever Square Jam.

On the east side of the Square in front of city hall, a basketball court will be set up along with lights. Square Jam is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., following the Homecoming parade that will start at 5:30 and travel from the Grove to the Square.

After a disappointing ending to the 2012 baseball season that saw Ole Miss drop two consecutive games that would have sent them to the NCAA Super Regionals, the Ole Miss baseball team returned to the diamond this fall to prepare for the 2013 season.

In front of a crowd of 662, the Ole Miss Lady Rebel volleyball team (7-5, 1-2 SEC) defeated Mississippi State (4-8, 0-3 SEC), 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-12) and earned its first Southeastern Conference win of the season on Friday night at the Gillom Sports Center.

With over 4,689 votes cast, the winner for Homecoming Queen and Colonel Reb could not be decided. Homecoming Queen candidate Ashleigh Davis edged Courtney Pearson by .34 percent of the vote, but it was not enough to prevent a runoff. Colonel Reb candidate Austin Harrison came away with 43.99 percent of the vote, while his competitor Doug Odom had 33.63 percent of the vote to force another runoff.

With freshman safety Trae Elston out for Saturday’s game against No. 14 Texas, the task of containing the Longhorns’ offense just got a little tougher for the Ole Miss defense. In his place, junior Frank Crawford becomes the backup at the rover safety position for Saturday, according to co-defensive coordinator Dave Wommack.

The 2012 Ole Miss baseball recruiting class took yet another hit last Thursday night when Rebel signee Ty Hensley announced he had agreed to terms to sign with the New York Yankees.

Hensley, who was drafted with the number 30 overall pick in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft in June, announced the decision via Twitter.

In honor of William Faulkner, the man who helped shape the town, the Oxford and Ole Miss community will honor the 50th anniversary of his death this Friday, July 6, with a “William Faulkner Remembrance”, followed by the 39th Annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference “Fifty Years After Faulkner,” July 7-11.
