In this week’s edition of Four Downs, The Daily Mississippian football beat writer Matt Sigler, sports editor David Collier and managing editor Austin Miller answer four questions regarding the week’s matchup.

1. How much will the long layoff effect Ole Miss?

Matt Sigler (@SigNewton_2): I think the long layoff will show early in the game, but eventually, I believe Ole Miss will settle in and not have any problems getting things back on track.

Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork said he knew the fine would be handed down, and they were prepared to handle the situation inside the stadium Saturday night.

I stepped on to the Ole Miss football beat for The Daily Mississippian at the beginning of the 2010 football season and immediately realized that the Ole Miss football program, which had won 18 games and back-to-back Cotton Bowls over the past two seasons, was headed in a drastically different direction.

The Rebels lost 49-48 that day in double overtime against Jacksonville State, and my first game on the beat was the beginning of the downfall of head coach Houston Nutt.

I’ve had a curious relationship with Ole Miss since I began seeing her in adolescence. One of the earliest memories I have of her is how she looked when Florida came to Oxford in 2002. I remember all of her admirers being elated to call themselves her Rebels that day – and I began to admire her as well.

For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl.

It was a crazy scene inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Saturday night as Ole Miss fans celebrated the Rebels’ 41-24 win in the Egg Bowl over Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), which snapped the Bulldogs’ three-game winning streak in the series. Students rushed the field after the win and surrounded players, coaches and the Golden Egg trophy.

Many thought the 6-foot-1, 254 pound Issac Gross wouldn’t make it in the Southeastern Conference as a defensive tackle, but the Ole Miss freshman is proving those critics wrong.

There was a time this season in which teams looked forward to having their defenses go up against LSU junior quarterback Zach Mettenberger. That time, it’s safe to say, has come and gone.

Mettenberger threw for 298 yards and a touchdown in a heartbreaking loss to Alabama two weeks ago and followed that up by tossing two touchdowns and 273 passing yards in a win against Mississippi State this past weekend.

With two more chances left to find a sixth win and clinch bowl eligibility, Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze took some time in his weekly Monday press conference to talk about just how much it has taken for the Ole Miss program to get to this point at 5-5 with LSU and Mississippi State left to go.

Some perspective is required when thinking about where the 2012 Ole Miss team realistically is in the aftermath of Saturday’s 27-26 loss to Vanderbilt that clinched bowl eligibility for the Commodores and put the Rebels’ bowl hopes on hold for at least another week.

Ole Miss has made significant progress under head coach Hugh Freeze, but there are some things that are beyond a coach’s control.

Depth, for example, is one of them.

The situation Saturday night was all too familiar for Ole Miss. Having the lead with just over two minutes left in the game, a defensive stop would have propelled the Rebels to six wins and bowl eligibility. Instead, they were handed another heartbreaking. This time by the Vanderbilt Commodores, who became bowl eligible themselves with the win.

Something to play for

November 8, 2012

Over the last two games against Arkansas and Georgia, Ole Miss has found itself unable to move the football on the ground.

The rushing attack was a key factor in the Rebels’ early season offensive success, as the team topped 150 yards rushing in six of their first seven games. However, over the last two weeks, the Rebels have combined for just 123 yards on 66 carries, averaging out to just 1.86 yards per carry.

Keep an eye on 29

Ole Miss is going to have its hands full Saturday afternoon defending No. 29 Jarvis Jones, a junior linebacker. Jones, one of the top linebackers in the country, has been wreaking havoc on opposing offenses all season long. The Bulldogs move Jones around quite a bit and have enough playmakers around him to make teams pay for overcompensating against Jones.

Just one win away from gaining bowl eligibility, the Ole Miss Rebels (5-3, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) will travel to Athens, Ga., on Saturday to play “Between the Hedges” against the No. 6 team in the country, Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC).

Both the Rebels and Bulldogs are coming off conference victories this past Saturday. The Rebels most recently defeated Arkansas, while Georgia took down then second-ranked Florida.
