In this week’s edition of Four Downs, The Daily Mississippian football beat writer Matt Sigler, sports editor David Collier and managing editor Austin Miller answer four questions regarding the week’s matchup.

1. How much will the long layoff effect Ole Miss?

Matt Sigler (@SigNewton_2): I think the long layoff will show early in the game, but eventually, I believe Ole Miss will settle in and not have any problems getting things back on track.

For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl.

Up 26-20 and in position to clinch bowl eligibility for the first time since 2009 after another field goal from Bryson Rose, Ole Miss’ defense couldn’t stop Vanderbilt from driving nine plays for 72 yards in 1:51. The Commodores topped it off with a Jordan Rodgers 26-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Chris Boyd to tie the game at 26-26.

Take advantage of turnovers

Auburn enters the game ranked 119th in the country in turnover margin at -11. The only team below them is Virginia at -12. The Tigers have coughed up seven fumbles and have thrown 10 interceptions on the season.

Third Downs

Texas A&M and Ole Miss are at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to third-down conversion percentage on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, Ole Miss is first in the Southeastern Conference in converting first downs, with a conversion percentage of 51 percent. That number will be put to the test against the Aggie defense, which is allowing opponents to convert just 26 percent of third downs, which is also first in the conference.

As I near the end of my time here at Ole Miss, I cannot help but be excited about the future for Ole Miss athletics. In my time on campus, I have seen some of the greatest moments in Ole Miss athletics history and some of the worst.

During his first two seasons in Oxford, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt did win.

During his first two seasons in Oxford, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt did win.

It started with a 31-30 signature win over No. 4 Florida in the Swamp, included back-to-back wins over LSU and finished with the second of back-to-back Cotton Bowl wins. However, after a disappointing 4-8 season, followed by a 2-7 start to this season, Athletics Pete Boone announced that the 2011 football season will be the last for head coach Houston Nutt.

Highs:
Victory in the Swamp
In just his fourth game as the coach of the Rebels and coming off of a 23-17 home loss to Vanderbilt, Nutt secured his first signature win for Ole Miss with a 31-30 victory over No. 4 Florida. A Kentrell Lockett-blocked extra point proved to be the difference on the scoreboard and Marcus Temple stopped Tim Tebow on a fourth-down run to seal the victory. The win became even more impressive as the Gators went undefeated the rest of the season and won the BCS National Championship.

1. Have to stop the run

Auburn loves to run the football, ranking 35th in the country and fourth in the Southeastern Conference with over 183 rushing yards per game. Sophomore running back Michael Dyer is second in the conference in carries, rushing the ball 159 times already this season (Almost 20 carries per game). Between Dyer, the speedy Onterio McCalleb, and electric freshman Tre Mason, the Tigers have plenty of options on the ground. Arkansas was successful running the ball on Ole Miss last week when they went into three and four wide sets that forced the Rebels to put extra defensive backs on the field and spreading the field. The Tigers certainly will attempt to do the same thing, and it could be a long day if Ole Miss hasn’t made an adjustment to fix this, particularly if freshman quarterback Kiehl Frazier is a big part of the Auburn offense.

1. Have to stop the run

October 20, 2011

Repeat the quick start

This past week against Alabama, Ole Miss jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, thanks to a big pass play from Randall Mackey to Nick Brassell, followed by a short touchdown run from Jeff Scott. The Rebels must do the same this week against Arkansas, which has shown a propensity to come out sluggish and fall behind early in a few games. If Ole Miss wants to keep this game close, an early lead is a must.

Younger players must step up on defense
