On Nov. 6, 2010, Ole Miss junior offensive lineman Derrick Wilson found out that his mother, Jelks Wilson, had been diagnosed with cancer.

On Nov. 6, 2010, Ole Miss junior offensive lineman Derrick Wilson found out that his mother, Jelks Wilson, had been diagnosed with cancer.

Wilson was at Horn Lake High School at the time and wanted to go see his mother when he got the call.

“When I found out, I wanted to go home, but my mother called and told me to stay at school,” Wilson said.

As time went on, Derrick’s mother went through chemotherapy treatments.

Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork announced Tuesday that Brett Frank, who was previously listed as the associate head coach, will serve as the acting head coach of the Ole Miss women’s basketball program for the upcoming season.

Rebecca Kates-Taylor will continue serving as an assistant coach, and Taja Edwards has been promoted from coordinator of video services to assistant coach. Bjork said that they will go into the season without hiring a third assistant coach, but he did indicate there will be administrative additions to the staff.

Ole Miss announced on Saturday that first-year women’s basketball head coach Adrian Wiggins will no longer serve as head coach and has been placed on administrative leave as the university and NCAA continue their joint investigation of “impermissible recruiting contacts and academic misconduct committed by members of his staff.”

It’s the first game for the Green Wave since the injury to senior safety Devon Walker, who fractured his spine during a game against Tulsa on Sept. 8. A New Orleans native, Walker is a cell and molecular biology major who earned a football scholarship after walking on to the team in 2009 and started the first two games this season for Tulane.

Ole Miss’ true freshman safety Trae Elston has been suspended for Saturday’s primetime ESPN matchup against the No. 14 Texas Longhorns, the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday. The league offices announced the suspension was the result of a flagrant hit Elston had on a UTEP wide receiver late in the fourth quarter in the Rebels’ 28-10 win over the Miners last Saturday.

That was first-year head coach Hugh Freeze’s message when he spoke before the Rebel faithful for a capacity crowd at the Gertrude Ford Center last December after being named the new Ole Miss head football coach. Today – one day before he coaches the first game of his tenure – the message remains the same.

Freeze walked into an ugly situation at Ole Miss. The Rebels had just completed one of their worst seasons in history, winning just two games for the first time since 1946.

Yes I know, that always seems to be the excuse when it comes to Ole Miss football. But if you said that after last season’s 2-10 debacle that handed Houston Nutt a ticket out of town, you were right.
 
That “next year” is finally here, and really, things have nowhere to go but up.

Ole Miss will be renewing its Mid-South rivalry with Memphis on the football field and the basketball court.

In a joint press release with Memphis Athletics, Ole Miss Athletics Director Ross Bjork announced Wednesday the institutions have signed a four-year contract to renew their football series, resuming in 2014 and running through 2017.

Brian O’Neal, a former Rebel and Mississippi native, leaves a University of Florida program that he helped lead to four national championships in the past four years. O’Neal also received national assistant coach of the year honors in 2009.

Bjork hit the ground running on his first day, meeting with different people, and he even paid a visit to those in charge of maintenance.

That’s how search committee co-chair and FedEx executive Mike Glenn described the hires of football coach Hugh Freeze and the recently introduced Athletics Director Ross Bjork, who previously served in the same capacity at Western Kentucky. The committee, which included Glenn, co-chair Archie Manning and Chancellor Dan Jones, agreed Bjork’s vision, qualifications, integrity and character set him apart from “a strong pool of candidates for the position.” In his introduction, Jones stressed the importance of athletics for Ole Miss, as well as excellence in the overall university.
