Whitehaven senior running back Mark Dodson Jr. verbally committed to Ole Miss on May 14, and he remains solid in his commitment, as he plans to graduate in December so he can enroll in classes in January and participate in spring practice. Dodson said he currently has straight A’s this semester, which would put him on the path to graduate early.

Now that National Signing Day has come and gone, recruiting junkies only have one thing left to do: wonder.

Those wonderers will sit around and ask themselves if Hugh Freeze’s recruiting class was good enough or if it will be something that ruins his career at Ole Miss, much like it did Houston Nutt.

Burdette committed to Hugh Freeze at Arkansas State and switched to Ole Miss in late January. Originally a running back, he was forced to play quarterback as a senior. He rushed for over 1,200 yards as a junior at the running back position. Listed as an athlete, he could play in the defensive secondary or at running back for the Rebels.

Unlike the rooms of various recruits around the country, there was little drama in the room where defensive tackle Issac Gross and defensive end/linebacker Temario Strong each signed a letter of intent to play for Ole Miss next season. The two signees join a long list of players who have come out of South Panola and moved on to play at Ole Miss for their college careers.

Greyshirting

A greyshirt is when a recruit delays his enrollment for a semester so his eligibility clock doesn’t start until January of the next year. The player can take less than a full load of classes and work out but can’t practice or play with the team. It is used by schools to create more room to sign players when scholarships are tight.

“Obviously we filled some need areas particularly on the offensive line and secondary,” said Freeze, who was named the Rebels’ 37th head coach on Dec. 5. “In the short amount of time we had, the results were very, very good.”

The Ole Miss football team hasn’t had many bright spots this season as they started the season 1-3, but one of those bright spots is freshman two-way player Nickolas Brassell.

Coming out of South Panola High School, Brassell was rated a four-star recruit by Scout.com and Rivals.com. In Saturday’s 27-13 loss to Georgia, he scored his first career touchdown on a punt return. Sophomore running back Jeff Scott fielded the punt. Brassell then took the reverse handoff and went 81 yards for the score.

When defensive end Wayne Dorsey arrived at Ole Miss, he was thought to be a quick fix for a position in need of depth, but the 2010 season didn’t go as well as he had hoped.

But one year later, Dorsey is not only becoming a force on the Rebel defensive line, he is becoming something that is much needed on this young team – a leader.

With the prospects in the 2012 recruiting class having completed summer camp season and starting their senior year, it’s time to take a look at how Ole Miss is doing so far for those 2012 prospects. Bennett Hipp, jbhipp@olemiss.edu, recaps the Rebels’ ten commitments so far. Remember, these prospects cannot sign until February 2012.

Still was the first commitment the Rebels received for the 2012 class as he committed April 21. At his current size, he projects to play at guard at the next level and should be a good one. In addition to Ole Miss, Still claims offers from Tulane and Memphis.

Meet Jelan Kendrick.

Kendrick played his high school ball in Marietta, Ga., just outside of Atlanta. There, he made himself a known commodity in the world of basketball by putting up remarkable numbers that had college coaches around the country calling on him.

In spring 2008, Kermit Tyler signed a football scholarship with the University of Mississippi.

There were high hopes surrounding Tyler, an offensive guard rated as a three-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com. But that summer, while working-out with the team, Tyler had an allergic reaction that later had life-changing implications.

“The second time that (the allergic reaction) happened to me, Coach (Houston) Nutt and the other coaches got me to the doctor,” Tyler said.

Justin Bell

Bell might not be as highly touted as his Callaway teammate, Aaron Morris, but he possesses all of the tools to be a dependable Division I offensive lineman. He is expected to play center, a position that Ole Miss already has several dependable players at and will likely red shirt to provide quality depth for the future.

1. Auburn: The Auburn Tigers have it going on in the special teams department with senior Wes Byrum booting field goals through the uprights. Byrum nailed 15-16 field goals last season for the Tigers. Kick returner Demond Washington – a one time Ole Miss commit – had the highest kick return average (31.1 yards) of any player in the Southeastern Conference with a reasonable number of reps.
