In 1837, the year Martin Van Buren succeeded Andrew Jackson in the presidency and the year Michigan became the 26th state admitted to U.S., three pioneers, all named John, bought 50 acres of land from two Chickasaw Native Americans, Princess Hoka and E Ah Nah Yea. They named that 50 acres after a town in England to promote an air of class to their new settlement.

One hot September Saturday in the Grove, people pounded the air to the tune of “From Dixie With Love,” in sympathy of the end of an era: the removal and replacement of Colonel Reb.

It began in 1997 when the Confederate flag was barred from being flown around the football stadium so Tommy Tuberville could recruit a few top-notch black athletes. It continued onward to the banning of Colonel Reb from the sidelines in 2003 to eventual replacement on Ole Miss merchandise by a black bear in 2010.

I am not your typical Ole Miss student. I was born and raised in South Dakota, a state I will always be proud of and will always call home. So technically, I’m not a Yankee, but I decided to use it in the headline because that’s the label that is often thrown upon me. However, I could not be more thankful for the warm embrace that I received at Ole Miss, and I wanted to use this column to share my appreciation for this great university, state and student body.

Entering Saturday’s game, Ole Miss and LSU were two teams headed in opposite directions.

The Rebels had lost three games in a row and five of their last six.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been more proud of the progress of our institution than ever before.

Without question, this place is far better off today than it was 50 years ago, and this month alone proved that. While this is not the only month, this month in particular we’ve seen significant progress in regard to every student’s experience.
