One of many bright spots this season for the Ole Miss football team is the emergence of freshman huskie Mike Hilton. The Fayetteville, Ga., native came out of Sandy Creek High School as a highly-touted offensive player, but found himself on the other side of the ball at the college level.

Whitehaven senior running back Mark Dodson Jr. verbally committed to Ole Miss on May 14, and he remains solid in his commitment, as he plans to graduate in December so he can enroll in classes in January and participate in spring practice. Dodson said he currently has straight A’s this semester, which would put him on the path to graduate early.

When the season began, junior Jeff Scott was the only Ole Miss running back with Southeastern Conference experience. There were several other guys that could help fill in at the position, but Scott had seen what it takes firsthand to be successful in arguably the nation’s strongest conference.

The only question regarding the 5-foot-7, 170-pound Scott was whether or not he could handle being the feature back of head coach Hugh Freeze’s offense.

After playing two different positions earlier during his time at Ole Miss — quarterback and wide receiver — senior Randall Mackey has found a new home at running back this season. It’s been a long process from where he started to now, but at running back, Mackey is finally starting to see the results he had hoped for.

In this week’s installment, The Daily Mississippian’s sports editor David Collier will rank the 14 Southeastern Conference teams. Opponents, game times and television networks are also included for each team.

1. Alabama (3-0, 1-0 SEC, 1st last week)

If anyone wasn’t already impressed with Alabama in the first two weeks of the season, they have to be after the Crimson Tide trampled the Arkansas Razorbacks on the road last weekend 52-0. Although Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson was sidelined with a head injury, it’s still really impressive what Nick Saban and his squad have been able to accomplish in the first few weeks of the year.

The Rebels’ 28-10 win over the visiting Miners of Conference-USA not only gave Ole Miss their same win total from 2011’s disappointing 2-10 season, but it was the first time Ole Miss opened the season 2-0 since defeating Memphis and Southeastern Louisiana in 2009. It was also the first time the Rebels won back-to-back games since wins over Fresno State and Kentucky in 2010.

Nathan Jeffery’s status

At the moment, it sounds like sophomore running back Nathan Jeffery is going to play for UTEP on Saturday after suffering a strained groin against Oklahoma last week. However, Jeffery didn’t practice again on Thursday, so it remains to be seen how effective he will be.

“Defensively, (it was) excellent,” Freeze said. “I thought their energy was great, and I thought their attention to detail was super. They were very coachable. Offensively, I don’t know, we didn’t have any pizzazz. No energy, no bounce in our step like it’s game week.

Quarterbacks:

Ole Miss exits fall camp the same way it entered it in regard to the quarterback race. Sophomore Bo Wallace and junior Barry Brunetti still sit even at the top of the depth chart and in the race to be the Rebels’ starting quarterback come the Sept. 1 season opener against Central Arkansas.  Both players were up and down throughout camp as a whole.

“I knew today would be a challenge because we went almost 200 plays yesterday of full [contact],” Freeze said. “It was a meat grinder. We needed it. I knew this morning the after effects of that could be a challenge, but I did think we found a way to get some good stuff done.”
