When Ole Miss and Pittsburgh clash in Saturday's BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., it could be one of the closest matchups of the bowl season.

Who has the advantage at each position? The Daily Mississippian sports editor David Collier takes a look.

Ole Miss and Pittsburgh are two of the most evenly matched teams in the bowl schedule this season, so Saturday's BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., should be a fun one to watch.

Here's who has the advantage at each position.

For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl.

The situation Saturday night was all too familiar for Ole Miss. Having the lead with just over two minutes left in the game, a defensive stop would have propelled the Rebels to six wins and bowl eligibility. Instead, they were handed another heartbreaking. This time by the Vanderbilt Commodores, who became bowl eligible themselves with the win.

ATHENS, Ga. — With Ole Miss up 10-7 in the second quarter, Georgia had the ball and the momentum after a 66-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Aaron Murray to senior wide receiver Marlon Brown. Then, Ole Miss and Georgia combined for four turnovers in the span of five plays, and while no points were scored off the turnovers, the Rebels missed out on a prime scoring opportunity after the first of the four turnovers.

When someone is rated the No. 1 player in the state, expectations are through the roof. It was no different for sophomore wide receiver Vince Sanders when he came out of Noxubee County High School in 2010 rated the No. 1 player in Mississippi. Along with that came the stress of being a highly sought-after recruit and the ultimate decision of where to play college football.

Sophomore wide receiver Donte Moncrief has found himself as the focus of many opposing defenses, resulting in double coverages and schemes built to stop him. This, however, has allowed for junior wide receiver Ja-Mes Logan and sophomore wide receiver Vince Sanders the opportunity to see more action and catch more passes.

Ole Miss’ true freshman safety Trae Elston has been suspended for Saturday’s primetime ESPN matchup against the No. 14 Texas Longhorns, the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday. The league offices announced the suspension was the result of a flagrant hit Elston had on a UTEP wide receiver late in the fourth quarter in the Rebels’ 28-10 win over the Miners last Saturday.

The Rebels’ 28-10 win over the visiting Miners of Conference-USA not only gave Ole Miss their same win total from 2011’s disappointing 2-10 season, but it was the first time Ole Miss opened the season 2-0 since defeating Memphis and Southeastern Louisiana in 2009. It was also the first time the Rebels won back-to-back games since wins over Fresno State and Kentucky in 2010.

When Ole Miss wide receiver Vince Sanders arrived in Oxford a couple of years ago, he did so with a lot of hype. However, a redshirt 2010 season and a lackluster 2011 season left people asking if he was overhyped.

With a new coaching staff, Sanders had a new opportunity that he hasn't let go to waste. He dedicated himself in the offseason and has the look of a completely different player who is ready to contribute in a big way.

The Daily Mississippian sports editor David Collier caught up with the University of Central Arkansas’ sports editor Lee Hogan to discuss Saturday’s season opener between Ole Miss and Central Arkansas.

David Collier: Tell us about about this Central Arkansas team. What do they bring to the table as they head into the season?

Lee Hogan: You have a lot of returning guys that had a successful 2011 season. They made their first appearance in the FCS playoffs last year. They finished up the season 9-4. They’ve got a lot of big play guys on offense, especially at running back and wide receiver.
